Reconciliation in China? The History Fatah-Hamas Conflict

By Liam Nagle / Arab America Contributing Writer After the Oslo Accords of the mid-1990s, a single Palestinian government under the Fatah party had control of the West Bank and Gaza Strip. But when Hamas won the Palestinian elections in 2006, a power struggle ensued – resulting in Palestinian infighting, and the separation of the … Continued

The series includes personalities from entertainment, business, sports, science, academia, journalism, and politics, among other areas. Our thirty-ninth pathbreaker, Ali Abunimah, is a Palestinian American activist and journalist. Contributing writer, John Mason, reports that Ali is a co-founder of The Electronic Intifada website and is described as “the leading American proponent of a one-state solution to the Israeli–Palestinian conflict.” Ali’s mother is a 1948 refugee from a Palestinian village that became part of Israel, and his father is from a village in what is now the occupied West Bank.

He has made a truly remarkable impact on broadcast journalism in reporting on the 2011 ‘Arab Spring’ events in Cairo and across the Arab World and presently he continues his broadcast career with his own show on cable MSNBC TV. Ayman has prominently made clear his support of the Palestinian people.

Israel’s Offer to Help Prevent the Collapse of the PA is Nonsensical

By: Bishara A Bahbah / Arab America Featured Columnist Israel’s cabinet on Sunday approved a measure submitted by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to “act to prevent the collapse of the Palestinian Authority.” The Israeli declarative statement came with many demands that Palestinian officials have quickly rejected. Those Israeli demands require that the Palestinian Authority (PA): … Continued

Bahbah: Ramadan Wedged Between Instability in Israel and a Possible Third Intifada

By: Bishara A Bahbah / Arab America Featured Columnist During this holy month of Ramadan, Palestinians are struggling to survive amid dire economic hardships, severe declining support for the Palestinian Authority (PA), an anticipated third intifada, a sharp rise in settler attacks, and the irresponsible actions and threats of far-right Israeli National Security Minister Itamar … Continued

New Gallup Poll Shows Modest Shift in American Sympathies towards Palestinians

A recent Gallup Poll shows American Democrats sympathize more with Palestinians than Israelis for the first time, with Independents and Republicans still siding more with Israelis in the conflict. Contributing writer, John Mason, reports on the Poll’s generally low rating for the Palestinian Authority and the decline in favorability towards the Netanyahu Government. Israel over previous decades has been treated in a bipartisan way by Americans but now the parties are polarized. This was accentuated under Trump, when sharp political differences were exaggerated by an unswerving loyalty to Israel’s government.

ROUNDUP: Two Key American Leaders Figuring Prominently in Pro-Palestinian Support• New Israeli ‘Minister of Chaos’ Cracks Down on West Bank• Palestinian Critics Outraged at Palestinian Authority Attendance at Aqaba Summit

Our roundup this week honors former President Jimmy Carter, 98 years old, who is now living at home in medical hospice. His post-presidency attack on Israel’s treatment of Palestinians got him in some trouble. Another American supporter of Palestinians who deserves attention is Democratic Senator Bernie Sanders. He has called for cutting billions of U.S. dollars over Israel’s “racist moves.” Contributing writer, John Mason, writes about these revered leaders and a third, less savory personality, Itamar Ben-Gvir, who has supported Jewish terrorists and is now Israel’s Minister of National Security for all Israelis and Palestinians. Finally, there is a brief note on Palestinian critics’ fury over the Palestinian Authority due to its attendance at the recent Aqaba Summit with Israel.

News Roundup: Sorry – Bad News from the Middle East for the U.S., much less Arab Americans, Palestinians, and even some Israelis

Four interrelated events in the Middle East comprise this week’s news roundup. First is how Secretary of State Blinken’s recent visit to Israel resulted in absolutely nothing for Palestinians. Second, an attack by Jewish settlers on a Christian quarter of West Jerusalem exacerbates Israeli-Palestinian problem. Third, the fact of the West Bank’s Jewish settler population exceeding half-a-million people only accentuates the issue of the Israeli-Palestinian crisis. Fourth, as much an opinion as an event, a dire scenario is presented about Netanyahu’s “full-scale assault on Israel’s democratic institutions.” Contributing writer, John Mason, ties together these four unfortunate, if not disheartening events.

Palestinians Caught in the Middle–As Usual–A Crackdown by both Israel and the Palestinian Authority

Israeli military forces have carried out more and more killings and arrests in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. Critics have warned that the Israeli crackdown would fuel more violence. A more subtle take on Israel’s suppression of Palestinians is its version of Sesame Street. It is aimed at preschoolers to erase vestiges of Palestine or Palestinians. Contributing writer, John Mason, writes that, almost as if joining the IDF in quelling the violence in the Occupied Territories, the Palestinian Authority security forces acted against its opposing parties.

Israel Shrugs off Accountability in Murder of Palestinian American Journalist—Shireen Abu Akleh

Only last week did the Israeli military admit it was ‘highly probable’ an IDF soldier mistakenly killed journalist Shireen Abu Akleh. Over and over, Israeli officials swore that none of the soldiers intended to harm the journalist. They ruled out any criminal investigation or charges against its troops. That is a criminal act in itself. John Mason, contributing writer, suggests that saying Abu Akleh’s killing was an accident does not let the IDF off the hook. That she was misidentified is preposterous. Or that there were Palestinian gunmen in the area is a lie.
