Pathbreakers of Arab America—Dena Takruri

This is the thirty-sixth of Arab America’s series on American pathbreakers of Arab descent. The series includes personalities from entertainment, business, sports, science, academia, journalism, and politics, among other areas. Our thirty-sixth pathbreaker is Dena Takruri, born in San Francisco. Her father was Palestinian, born and raised in the occupied West Bank city of Hebron. John Mason, contributing writer, depicts how Dena’s classic American education led her to an esteemed career in journalism, though one she purposely skewed towards an impassioned view of her fellow Arabs and Palestinians.

Israel Shrugs off Accountability in Murder of Palestinian American Journalist—Shireen Abu Akleh

Only last week did the Israeli military admit it was ‘highly probable’ an IDF soldier mistakenly killed journalist Shireen Abu Akleh. Over and over, Israeli officials swore that none of the soldiers intended to harm the journalist. They ruled out any criminal investigation or charges against its troops. That is a criminal act in itself. John Mason, contributing writer, suggests that saying Abu Akleh’s killing was an accident does not let the IDF off the hook. That she was misidentified is preposterous. Or that there were Palestinian gunmen in the area is a lie.

U.S. and Israel Go Tit-for-Tat Over Palestinian Human Rights

Democratic representatives of the U.S. House have demanded a U.S. investigation of Palestinian American journalist Abu Akleh’s murder. Contributing writer, John Mason reports on this and the response to Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib’s demand by Israel’s Ambassador to the U.S. In a related event, he recounts that Tlaib introduced a House Resolution to recognize the Nakba (The Catastrophe), referring to the founding of the Israeli state in 1948.
