posted on: Mar 8, 2008

Dr. Farouck Obeid, a longtime activist and leader in the Detroit Arab American and Syrian community died early Saturday after a year-long battle with cancer. He was 58 years old.

“Those of us who knew Farouck were enriched by his knowledge, his teaching, his humor, and his
larger-than life personality” said Dr. Nabil Khoury, President of the National Arab American Medical Association, he went on to say, “By almost all measures, he was a giant, both professionally and personally. His students will always remember his legendary wit, and expansive knowledge, and gentle spirit.”

Dr. Obeid led Henry Ford Hospital’s trauma and critical care program for many years before going to Hurley Hospital as an HFMG surgeon. There, he led the transformation of Hurley Hospital into the first level I trauma center without a surgical residency program.

In the Arab American community, Dr. Obeid touched the lives of countless people. Not only was he a past president of the American Syrian Arab Cultural Association (ASACA), but he was a member of its Board of Trustees.

He was an advocate of the Arab renaissance and was known for his love of the Arab culture and heritage. It was not uncommon for him to recite a classical Arabic poem at various occasions in the Arab American community.

Dr. Obeid was known for his willingness to give, many in the community would go to him for assistance and advice. In many ways, he was not only a community leader, but a great resource for many.

Dr. Obeid is survived by his wife, Gloria and their four children, Nadia, Nabeel, Leila, and Nicholas.
