U.S. news site calls Palestinian Dessert Israeli, Sparks Online Ire
A photo of the famous Palestinian dessert of Kanafeh went viral on the Internet after an American news website labeled it as an Israeli dish, Palestinian news website The Electronic Intifada reported Thursday.
The picture, which was part of an article called “17 incredible desserts from around the world,” was later removed by the website.
Meanwhile, the Israeli news website Haaretz said that: “Though labelled Israeli by BuzzFeed, [Kanafeh] is primarily made by the country’s Arab citizens and is widely regarded as an Arab dish.”
In 2009, Palestinians claimed they made the world’s biggest kanafeh in the occupied West Bank city of Nablus.
It is one of the most famous Palestinian desserts for which the occupied West Bank city of Nablus is particularly renowned.
Kanafeh is a dessert made from mild white cheese topped with a crispy layer of shredded wheat, and drizzled with sugar syrup.
Many variations of the Kanafah exist in the Middle East, including in Lebanon, Turkey, Jordan and Syria.
