Youssef Zalal was born on September 4, 1996, in Casablanca, Morocco. He is currently ranked #7 among featherweight mixed martial artists worldwide. Nicknamed “The Moroccan Devil”, Zalal has taken an unconventional route to the top of the UFC rankings. His grit, tenacity, and steady growth have secured him a position among the elite. He has earned accolades, including 2024 Comeback Fighter of the Year and two UFC Performance Bonuses. Zalal exemplifies relentless drive, persisting through adversity.

Career Overview

Zalal made his professional MMA debut in 2017 as part of the Legacy Fighting Alliance. There, he fought his way to a 7-2 record. After a knockout win over Jamie Hernandez, he was signed to a UFC contract. He started strong, securing a three-fight win streak, all by unanimous decision. However, things soon became more difficult when Zalal faced rising prospect Ilia Topuria who would go on to become the UFC featherweight champion and current lightweight champion of the world. Topuria is also the #2 pound-for-pound fighter globally.

Zalal lost to Topuria by unanimous decision, marking his first UFC loss. Following that, he went on a three-fight skid, including a draw against Da’Mon Blackshear. This led to his release from the promotion in August 2022. Despite this setback, Zalal did not give up on his dream of becoming a champion. He worked on his game and racked up three straight wins by finishing. At age 27, he was signed back to the UFC and returned with a second-round submission over Billy Quarantillo. He then secured three more wins before booking the biggest fight of his life.

Ultimately, Zalal was scheduled to fight UFC veteran Josh Emmett on the main card of UFC 320 in October 2025, and in this pivotal match, he won with a first-round submission, proving that “The Moroccan Devil” is a force to be reckoned with in title matchups. Building on this momentum, it was recently announced that Zalal would headline his first main event—a featherweight title eliminator against former bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling. Now, Zalal will look to use his full skill set to fend off Sterling and put himself in immediate title contention. From being cut from the promotion to fighting a former champion with a title shot on the line, the Moroccan fighter has shown he is here to stay.

Arab Representation

There are only 4 current UFC fighters from Morocco, indicating massive under-representation of North African fighters on the biggest MMA stage. Due to this underrepresentation,  whenever Zalal takes the walk to the octagon, he carries much more than just his name into the cage. As the only widely recognized Moroccan competitor, he has taken on the role of putting his nation on the MMA map. His rise into title contention brings mass publicity to fighters from the region, letting the world know that Morocco can produce elite fighters. This success aligns with the rise of martial arts in the Arab world—particularly the expansion of boxing in Saudi Arabia—and highlights how Zalal is helping create a multifaceted approach by excelling in MMA.

Additionally, his comeback after being cut from the UFC and his subsequent fights in smaller promotions are inspirational to young Arab fighters worldwide. Zalal demonstrates that continually working toward your goals can yield success, even when the path is not straight. As MMA rapidly grows worldwide and the UFC leads this surge, fighters like Youssef Zalal have unmatched opportunities to gain publicity on big fight cards and showcase their talents to the world.

Conclusion

Youssef Zalal’s rise to success represents much more than wins in a cage; his non-linear path to a main-event fight at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas shows a determination to stick to his craft and keep pushing. Zalal hasn’t had the easiest time in the UFC, ranging from fighting one of the greatest fighters of all time, Ilia Topuria, as a young fighter to being cut from the promotion, but he hasn’t shown any signs of slowing down. Also, Zalal has the pressure of fighting for his nation on his shoulders, something most fighters from more represented nations don’t have to deal with. Every time he makes the walk, he is walking for his nation, not just himself.
