ADC Action Alert: Oppose

posted on: Mar 1, 2011

The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee Michigan Network urges you to immediately contact your State Legislator, as well as Governor Rick Snyder, and tell them that you oppose House Bill 4035, also known as the “Support Our Law Enforcement and Safe Neighborhoods Act.” This dangerous “Arizona-look-alike bill” will have a negative impact on the State of Michigan and individual freedoms of its residents.

This legislation will allow police departments to enforce federal immigration law by questioning persons about their immigration status. This may lead to the possible detention and questioning of individuals based solely upon physical features, the way they speak, and based upon what religious-oriented attire they may be wearing.

The bill has been introduced by Rep. Dave Agema (R-Grandville) and co-sponsored by Reps. Thomas Hooker, Peter Pettalia, Bob Genetski, Ray Franz, Matt Huuki, Marty Knollenburg, Joel Johnson, Anthony Forlini, Ben Glardon, Dale W. Zorn, Philip Potvin, Paul Opsommer, Kurt Damrow, Bill Rogers, Matt Lori, and Paul Scott.

As a proud resident of the State of Michigan I ask you to vote No on HB 4035. The implementation of this bill is not only dangerous; it will also hinder economic growth, and encroach on the civil rights and liberties of all residents in Michigan. I ask that all law makers focus their attention on more important issues facing this State, matters such as the economy and education warrant much more attention than this “Arizona-look-alike bill.”
