The American Music Awards received more attention than usual Sunday night after Gigi Hadid, a Palestinian American model, impersonated Melania Trump.

The internationally recognized supermodel was hosting the awards show with comedian and impressionist Jay Pharoah. After Pharoah did an impersonation of Jay-Z, Hadid said she had an impersonation she would like to do, as well. Hadid offered her impression of Melania Trump, who is a former model herself, by pursing her limps and saying, “I love my husband, President Barack Obama, and our children, Sasha and Malia,” playing on the plagiarism accusation caused by the future first lady’s RNC speech in July.

Hadid’s impersonation was immediately followed by backlash from Twitter and Facebook users who called the act rude and disrespectful. Many went on to call Hadid a bully and asked for an apology. Despite the fact that Melania Trump’s husband has mocked disabled people, Indian Americans, and others – all while Twitter bullying anyone who disagrees with him – Hadid’s impersonation has caused uproar.

Many comedians and television shows have mocked Melania Trump’s plagiarism controversy, but Gigi Hadid seems to be getting the worst response of all. Hadid’s Palestinian heritage has been roped into the conversation, with many Twitter users offering bigoted attitudes towards the model, calling her a “radical” and a “stinking Arab.”
