Middle Beast Tour: Bassem Youssef Down the Street From the White House

YALA YA BASSEM!! One of the most memorable moments of the Arab Spring and its aftermath was Bassem Youssef’s. His show, Al-Berameg, brought laughter to many of our homes. Throughout its three-year run, Al-Berameg attracted more than 30 million viewers per week. However, political pressure forced him to cancel the program after he was detained for allegedly insulting Egypt’s president. His unorthodox start as a surgeon to a now comedian happened during the 2011 uprisings in Egypt. Where he describes feeling a calling to say something about what is happening, not knowing it would lead to the most watched program in the country, his detainment, and exile from his home country. When no one dared to be outwardly political during a regime change, Bassem Youssef pushed the boundaries of free speech in his country, which led him to reside in Los Angeles, California. He is on the Middle Beast tour, which our writer Malak Hassouna enjoyed attending at Warner Theatre in DC.

Elyanna’s Live Performance Leaves Audience in Tears: NYC Tour Review

In 2023, we witnessed Elyanna’s rise to fame, highlighted by her historic performance at the Coachella Music Festival. With many artists such as Saint Levant, Bayou, Ali Gatie, etc…however, Elyanna has been able to distinguish herself from others by insisting on just performing in Arabic. While other artists blend English and French with their Arabic, she is resolute on keeping it just in Arabic, including at the Coachella. That is not the only thing that sets her apart from others; her extreme vocals, physicality, the edge way she dresses (which is styled by her sister), drums, and the spectacle of her performance also set her apart. Join Malak Hassouna as she talks about her experience at the New York show.

Israel’s Use of Dumb Bombs on the Gaza Strip Tells a Different Story, One with an Intent to Kill

According to a recent report compiled by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, more than half of the air-to-ground munitions Israel used in Gaza since the start of the war, October 7th, were “dumb bombs” or unguided bombs. The usage of the bomb posed a huge threat to an area like Gaza which is densely populated in the world. It is estimated that over 2 million people live on the territory. The U.S pressuring Israel to lessen its civilian death toll is contrary to their more recent weapons sale with Israel and has called many to question Biden’s administration even those of his own political party especially with the Palestinian death toll rising above 20,000 and those injured over 50,000. The usage of unguided bombs on a small and dense region has made the global population question Israel’s motivation, which is now seemingly malicious.

Terrence Malick: An Arab American’s Contribution to the Entertainment Industry:

n today’s highly politicized identity discussions around media, representation, and visibility within the arena of the Western entertainment industry valorized as the official and universal vessel of meaning-making, it is refreshing how unconcerned prolific filmmaker Terrence Malick (of Lebanese and Assyrian heritage through his father) is of the politics of identity markers. The calls for re-imagining Arab American representation in media are warranted after decades of fetishizing, otherizing, and villainizing.

Ramy Youssef’s Activism on an American Stage

New Jersey-born Ramy Youssef. He has risen to become a well-known standup comedian, but in recent years, he has also come to our screens in more ways than once as a writer, director, and star of his own Hulu show “Ramy.” He also has displayed his talents through recurring roles on shows like “Mr. Robot” and “See Dad Run,” and even co-created and executive produced the Netflix comedy-drama series “Mo” about a Palestinian-American family. He has already played a significant role in bringing more Arab narratives to our screen. He has actively brought the Palestinian story to our attention even before October 7, 2023.
