A Networker with a Purpose: Team Michigan Kicks Off 2026 with Impact

posted on: Jan 14, 2026

Building community through connection, culture, and service

The Arab America Foundation began 2026 with momentum, meaning, and measurable impact through a vibrant afternoon community gathering hosted by Team Michigan. Designed to bring together friends, families, and longtime “cousins” of the Foundation, the event served as both a networking opportunity and a call to collective action—demonstrating how community connection can be paired with purposeful giving.

The recent gathering reflected the values that guide the work of the Arab America Foundation: connection, collaboration, culture, and care for one another. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, filled with conversation, laughter, and new introductions. From longtime supporters to first-time attendees, the afternoon brought together individuals united by a shared commitment to strengthening the Arab American community in Michigan and beyond.

Giving Back at the Heart of the Gathering

Rather than charging admission, Team Michigan AAF invited guests to participate in a children’s coat drive, asking them to bring a new coat to donate to a child in need. The response was inspiring. Dozens of brand-new coats were collected, each one representing more than winter warmth—it symbolized dignity, compassion, and solidarity during Michigan’s coldest months.

All donated coats were collected and distributed by Zaman International, a respected local nonprofit dedicated to supporting families and empowering underserved communities. Through this partnership, the coats will provide immediate and tangible relief to children who need them most.

A Model of Community Collaboration

A key reason the coat-drive model was possible was because of the extraordinary generosity of Shawarma Box in Canton and its owner, Issa AbuJudeh. By donating their space and hospitality, Shawarma Box enabled the event to focus fully on service rather than costs—allowing attendees to contribute coats in lieu of purchasing tickets or meals.

This thoughtful collaboration created a true win-win-win: the Arab America Foundation strengthened relationships and community engagement, Zaman International received essential winter donations for children, and Shawarma Box demonstrated leadership through generosity and civic commitment. The event served as a powerful example of how local businesses and nonprofit organizations can collaborate to create meaningful outcomes.

National Leadership and a Broader Vision

The afternoon was further enriched by the presence of Arab America Foundation Co-Founders Warren David and Dr. Amal David, who traveled from Washington, D.C. to join the Michigan community. Their attendance underscored the importance of local teams like Team Michigan in advancing the Foundation’s national mission.

During the gathering, they shared updates on national activities and offered insight into upcoming plans for National Arab American Heritage Month (NAAHM) in April. Their remarks highlighted the growing reach of NAAHM across the country and reinforced the strong connection between grassroots community engagement and national visibility for Arab American heritage, identity, and contributions.

Culture That Connects

Adding depth and beauty to the afternoon were memorable musical performances that elevated the gathering beyond networking alone. Guests were captivated by the vocals of Omar Kurdi from Cleveland and by the extraordinary artistry of Maryam Shakaa, a Palestinian oud player, singer, and composer who traveled from Toronto to participate. Their performances reminded attendees that music and cultural heritage define Arab American identity.

Looking Ahead

Team Michigan AAF was especially encouraged by the strong turnout of new attendees, whose presence brought fresh energy and perspectives. Expanding the network of supporters, collaborators, and friends of the Arab America Foundation remains a priority as the organization looks ahead to a busy and impactful year.

As 2026 unfolds, the Foundation remains committed to building on moments like this—strengthening community bonds, fostering collaboration, and creating opportunities for collective good. The Michigan gathering served as a reminder that when purpose guides our networking and generosity fuels our actions, the result is a stronger, more connected community.

Team Michigan extends its gratitude to everyone who attended, contributed, performed, and supported this meaningful start to the year. Together, we move forward with optimism, intention, and a shared belief in what we can achieve—when community truly comes first.
