The Middle East Center, in collaboration with Penn Libraries and the New York Forum of Amazigh Film, invites you to a screening and discussion of Taɛzrit on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, from 2:00–4:00 PM in the Class of 1955 Conference Room, located on the second floor of Van Pelt-Dietrich Library Center.

Taɛzrit follows the daily life of Habiba, a Chaoui woman from Ghassira, a semi-desert village in the Aurès region of eastern Algeria. Moving beyond familiar stereotypes and conventional narratives, the film explores Habiba’s relationship with her land as an expression of a deeper collective memory—one shaped by generations of women whose lives and experiences have often existed outside official histories.

As Habiba navigates between traditions that carry the stories of her ancestors and a desire to define herself beyond imposed categories, Taɛzrit raises profound questions about freedom, belonging, identity, and rootedness. Her story reveals a quiet but persistent form of resistance as she reclaims her relationship with her body, her land, and her own life.
