NYC Department of Small Business Services to Consider MENA Minority Business Status

posted on: May 4, 2025

Help Shape Policy for MENA Business Owners Doing Business in NYC

Are you a business owner from the Middle East or North Africa (MENA) living or operating in New York City? Your voice matters now more than ever. The New York City Department of Small Business Services (SBS) is considering recognizing MENA business owners as a distinct minority group. This vital step could provide greater access to public contracts, technical assistance, and business development funding.

To ensure this potential designation reflects the real needs of our community, SBS is conducting a Disparity Study. As part of this effort, they invite MENA business owners to complete a short survey and express interest in joining a focus group. Your participation will directly influence the City’s understanding of how MENA business owners are being served—and where support is lacking.

This is a vital opportunity to help shape inclusive policies, eliminate barriers, and pave the way for future generations of entrepreneurs from our region. By sharing your business experience, you can help ensure MENA communities are no longer invisible in the eyes of policymakers.

Please take a few minutes to fill out the survey linked below. If selected for the focus group, your insights will be instrumental in advocating for equity, opportunity, and recognition.
