On Saturday night in Las Vegas, Casablanca native Youssef Zalal took on former UFC bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling in a 5 round main event fight in an attempt to put his name into title contention against the champion Alexander Volkanovski. Unfortunately, Zalal lost the fight 49-45 on all three judges’ scorecards, unable to withstand Sterling’s relentless pressure and backpack-style wrestling. Zalal displays a unique skill set, highlighted by his elite athleticism and a high-level blend of wrestling and striking. Zalal is only 29 years old, so one loss to a fighter who has faced the most elite competition is not an end-all be-all for Zalal. He has shown himself to be persistent and take every experience as a learning opportunity, so there’s no doubt that Zalal will be ready to go in the near future.

Fight Recap

Going into the fight, it was known that this would be a significant step up in competition for the Moroccan. Zalal has reinvented himself since being cut from the UFC in 2022, focusing intently on refining his skill set, and it showed as he rode a 5-fight win streak with 4 finishes during his second UFC tenure. However, Zalal had never fought a 5-round fight, and going up against a fighter like Sterling, who has participated in many, seemed too big a mountain for Zalal to climb on Saturday night. Sterling won the first round by mixing his strikes with takedown attempts that kept Zalal from getting comfortable. The second round was much of the same, and Sterling went up 20-18 heading into the third round. Here, Zalal had a bit of success both on the feet and a touch on the ground, which evidently was enough to win him the round to get himself back into the fight. However, round 4 was where Sterling’s experience proved a bit too much for Zalal. Sterling ended up on top and held Zalal down while landing strikes to win the round 10-8, which put Zalal in a tough spot for the 5th and final round. However, he wasn’t able to get much offense going, and Sterling’s experience and pressure wrestling prevailed. When the scorecards were read, Sterling was announced the winner, with all three judges scoring the fight 49-45 in his favor. Sterling won rounds 1,2 and 5 by a score of 10-9 and round 4 10-8 as Zalal took round 3 10-9. Overall, it was a frustrating night for Zalal in the Octagon, but this is far from the last we will see from the Moroccan Devil.

Lessons

Zalal has always been a fighter who prides himself on resilience, so there’s no doubt that he’ll be back better than ever before. Zalal thrives in adversity and will surely use this loss as motivation to come back better than ever. Zalal posted a photo on his personal Instagram account shortly after the fight, where he wrote “Alhamdulillah!! Thank you, guys, for all the support. I’ll be back. Keep smiling.” Sterling then replied, “Always love my brotha! You pushed me to new limits, and I hope I pushed you too! Wallahi, you will be champion one day!” This is high praise coming from Sterling, who knows what it takes to become champion, so the future is sure to remain bright for the featherweight contender. Some fighters would be deterred by a loss of this nature; however, that is not the cloth from which he is cut. Zalal is defined by persistence and will continue to improve his skills.

Conclusion

Overall, Youssef Zalal wasn’t able to handle the pressure of Sterling; however, his track record, self-confidence, and comments from his opponent assure fight fans that he will continue to climb up the rankings and that with experience and hard work, he will soon be back in a position to fight for championship consideration. Zalal has a mindset like none other, and this will help bring him UFC gold, as many predict, when he decides to call it a career.
