Heat Waves in the Middle East

Recently, the Middle East has experienced a severe heat wave, which had many consequences. Not only on the environment but on human health as well. Temperatures in the Arabian Gulf have risen over 125°F (52°C), causing an increase in heat-related illnesses. As well as worries about water and food security. Bringing a stark reminder of the need for climate action.

Her Excellency, the Minister of Climate Change and Environment in the UAE; Mariam Almheiri emphasized the significance of hosting COP28.

“The UAE’s hosting of COP28 this year, along with naming 2023 as the Year of Sustainability, is tangible evidence of our wise leadership’s vision and commitment to playing a leading role in the fight against climate change, which impacts humanity as a whole. UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has demonstrated the UAE’s commitment to uniting global efforts in line with the approach of our late founding leader, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan,” Almheiri expressed.

World leaders, decision-makers, scientists, and activists may assemble at COP28. Discussing the battle against climate change and how to map out the course ahead. Implementing the Paris Agreement will be at the center of the discussion. With a focus on raising global climate ambition to keep warming below 2 degrees Celsius. While aiming for 1.5 degrees Celsius over pre-industrial levels.

A Plan of Action

According to the COP28 Presidency, it will seek to maintain the 1.5 degree Celsius goal. While ensuring that the world responds to the Stocktake with a clear plan of action. This includes the steps to close the gaps in progress. At COP28, participants want to encourage innovation in the way food is grown and produced. Therefore, sustainable agriculture will also take center stage on the agenda.

The necessity of strengthening adaptation strategies to shield vulnerable populations and ecosystems from the effects of rising temperatures and extreme weather events will also be covered during the conference. Delegates will also look into ways to assist countries that are at risk from climate change, promote renewable energy sources, and mobilize climate financing to quicken the world’s transition to a low-carbon economy.

The UAE is a perfect host for COP28 due to its pioneering work in sustainable development and renewable energy programs. The country has made outstanding progress in carrying out strong carbon reduction objectives, extensively investing in solar and wind energy, and diversifying its energy mix.

The UAE hopes to increase awareness of the local and global effects of climate change. While also promoting quick and coordinated climate action by holding COP28 in the middle of an escalating heat wave. The conference’s decisions will unquestionably have an impact that extends well beyond the Middle East. In terms of determining the course of future international attempts to solve the climate crisis.
