In the city of Misrata in Libya, generations of families have relied on Howira, a traditional drink made from roasted barley, wheat, legumes, herbs, seeds, and nuts ground into a fine powder and mixed with water.

Known for its high nutritional value, Howira is rich in fiber, protein, healthy fats, and slow-releasing carbohydrates that provide long-lasting energy and hydration.

Howira is made by roasting, grinding, and blending ingredients like chickpeas, lentils, sesame seeds, flaxseed, coriander, cumin, almonds, and peanuts.

Though known by various names in other Libyan cities, such as “Rwina” or “Rouina,” the drink is most closely associated with Misrata, where it is still widely prepared, and the recipe is passed down through generations.

A Nutritional Tradition

Long before protein powders, meal replacements, and modern wellness drinks entered the market, Libyan households were already producing their own natural blend using accessible ingredients with high nutritional value.

The combination of roasted grains and legumes creates a drink designed to be quick yet filling and practical.

Barley and wheat provide complex carbohydrates and fiber, while chickpeas and lentils contribute protein and minerals. Sesame seeds and flaxseed add healthy fats, and herbs such as coriander and cumin give the mixture its distinct aroma and flavor.

Because the ingredients are roasted before grinding, Howira develops a deeper, earthy taste while also becoming shelf-stable and easy to store for long periods. Its consistency varies depending on preference. Some prepare it as a lighter drink, while others make it thick and dense. Sugar is commonly added, and some families finish it with olive oil, nuts, dates, or dried fruit as garnish.
