Arab America Foundation Announces Confirmed Speakers and Performers for Annual CONNECT Empowerment Summit November 6-7, 2026

WASHINGTON, D.C., September 21, 2026 — The Arab America Foundation is excited to announce the speakers and programming for the 2026 CONNECT Empowerment Summit, taking place Friday, November 6, and Saturday, November 7, 2026, at the Westfields Marriott Washington Dulles in Chantilly, Virginia.

Bringing Arab Americans together from across the country, CONNECT is a national gathering designed to inspire, educate, celebrate, and empower. The Summit will feature prominent community leaders, public servants, entrepreneurs, educators, artists, advocates, professionals, and rising leaders engaging in timely conversations about the future of the Arab American community.

“The CONNECT Empowerment Summit is about bringing our community together and turning connection into action,” said Warren David, President of Arab America and Co-Founder of the Arab America Foundation. “At a time when Arab American voices and stories are receiving unprecedented attention, we have an opportunity to strengthen our community, celebrate our heritage, develop the next generation of leaders, and take greater ownership of our narrative.”

This year’s program will explore some of the most important issues and opportunities facing Arab Americans today, including public service and civic engagement, women’s leadership, mental health, entrepreneurship, education, mentorship, cultural identity, and strengthening the Arab American narrative.

Amr Abozaid

Amr M. Abozaid is a community leader, organizer, and advocate with a background spanning nonprofit leadership, media, and civic engagement. He serves as Director of Small Business Services at the Yemeni American Merchants Association (YAMA), designing programs that uplift immigrant entrepreneurs, counter xenophobia, and widen economic opportunity. An experienced trainer and campaigner, Amr has led workshops and webinars on entrepreneurship, crime prevention, civic participation, and minority business certification. He holds an M.A. in Political Science from Brooklyn College. Recognized for building cross-community partnerships and innovative programs, he elevates immigrant voices through storytelling and public engagement, always centering people, purpose, and measurable impact.

Lana Abu-Gharbieh

Lana Abu-Gharbieh is a Palestinian American nurse and Mrs. Arab USA 2026, representing Arab American women with pride, grace, and a strong commitment to cultural heritage and community engagement. Through her professional and public service, she reflects compassion, leadership, and dedication to others. As Mrs. Arab USA, Abu-Gharbieh seeks to celebrate Arab identity, highlight the achievements of Arab American women, and encourage greater visibility and connection across generations. She brings warmth, confidence, and deep appreciation for the traditions that unite Arab communities while inspiring others to embrace their heritage and promote positive Arab American representation within the broader American community.

Fadi Abughoush

Fadi Abughoush has served Chicago Public Schools for 19 years and currently chairs the World Languages Department at Lindblom Math & Science Academy, overseeing Arabic and Chinese programs. Since 2008, he has taught Arabic to grades 8–12, developing a culturally rich curriculum integrating music, film, art, literature, and cuisine. A leader in Arabic language education, he advances Comprehensible Input and presents nationally on engagement-centered instruction. Abughoush serves on the Chicago Arabic Teachers Council board, formerly chaired ACTFL’s Arabic Special Interest Group, contributed to CPS language guidance, and has led student academic and cultural programs internationally in Qatar, Jordan, and Morocco.

Sara Shouhayib Alawar

Sara Shouhayib Alawar is an Emmy Award–winning journalist turned entrepreneur. After nearly a decade of reporting for ABC, CBS, and FOX affiliates, she founded Capital Emcee, providing emceeing, auctioneering, voice-over services, marketing, and social media management. She has helped nonprofits nationwide raise thousands for vital missions. Beyond business, Sara is a mindfulness meditation instructor, wellness retreat host, and soon-to-be children’s book author. After 15 years and nine cities, she settled in Houston with her husband, Rawad. Raised in Troy, Michigan, by Lebanese immigrants Kamal and Yasmine, with siblings Rabeeh, Omar, and Nada, Sara champions community and connection.

Abbas Alawieh

Abbas Alawieh is the Democratic nominee for Michigan State Senate District 2, representing communities including Dearborn, Dearborn Heights, Allen Park, Melvindale, and parts of Detroit and Taylor. A Dearborn native and two-time University of Michigan graduate, he previously served as Chief of Staff to Congresswoman Cori Bush and as a senior congressional staffer for Representatives Rashida Tlaib and Andy Levin. Alawieh also co-founded the Uncommitted movement, which gained national attention during the 2024 presidential primary. His career has focused on public policy, grassroots organizing, civic engagement, and advocating for working families and greater community participation in government.

Debbie Almontaser

Dr. Debbie Almontaser is a Yemeni-American educator, interfaith leader, and advocate for Muslim and immigrant communities. She is the founding principal of the Khalil Gibran International Academy in Brooklyn, the first Arabic dual-language public school in the United States. A sought-after speaker on cultural diversity, civic engagement, and combating Islamophobia, she serves as CEO of Bridging Cultures Group, Inc., and co-founder of the Muslim Community Network. Recognized for her bridge-building leadership, Debbie has received numerous awards and authored Leading While Muslim. Her lifelong work empowers marginalized voices and fosters understanding across communities in New York City and beyond.

Issam Andoni

Issam Andoni is a technologist, entrepreneur, and founder of Zeva Holding Group, which owns and operates multiple technology companies. As Chairman of the Andoni Family Foundation, he is dedicated to advancing technology and innovation in Palestine, fostering opportunities for growth and empowerment. With a strong commitment to community engagement, Mr. Andoni actively supports initiatives that strengthen Arab American identity, leadership, and connection. His work bridges business success with social impact, reflecting a vision that combines entrepreneurship, philanthropy, and cultural pride. As Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Arab America Foundation, he shares his passion for empowering future generations through technology and community building.

Ahmad Ashkar

Ahmad Ashkar is a Palestinian American entrepreneur, author, and social-impact leader best known as the founder of Falafel Inc., the fast-growing restaurant concept built around the philosophy “Eat for Good.” Founded in Washington, D.C., Falafel Inc. combines affordable Middle Eastern food with a mission to support and empower refugees. Ashkar also founded the Hult Prize Foundation, which has helped cultivate social entrepreneurs and startups around the world. A recognized authority on entrepreneurship and innovation, he is the author of The Pursuit of Impact and co-founder of the Forerunners Leadership Institute. His work demonstrates how entrepreneurship can combine business growth, cultural pride, and social purpose.

Shatha Atiya

Dr. Shatha Atiya is a licensed clinical and forensic psychologist based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. She serves as a court-appointed forensic examiner for the Broward and Miami-Dade Circuit Courts, conducting evaluations of competency, risk, and mitigation, and providing expert testimony in both criminal and civil matters. In clinical practice, she treats trauma-related, mood, and anxiety disorders and conducts cross-cultural and neuropsychological assessments. Dr. Atiya trains attorneys and clinicians in evidence-based evaluation methods, report writing, and courtroom testimony, and consults with schools and community organizations on mental health literacy. Her work emphasizes culturally responsive care, ethical practice, and improving access for underserved populations.

Ameera David

Ameera David is an Emmy Award-winning journalist and former anchor at Sinclair Media in Washington, DC and WXYZ-TV in Detroit. Ameera’s work highlights pressing issues in politics, international affairs, and the economy, earning her recognition for thoughtful and impactful storytelling. A proud Arab American, she is dedicated to amplifying diverse voices and fostering greater understanding through journalism. At the CONNECT Arab America Empowerment Summit, she brings her expertise, passion, and commitment to community empowerment.

Rana el Kaliouby

Dr. Rana el Kaliouby is an Egyptian American scientist, entrepreneur, investor, and pioneer in artificial intelligence. She is co-founder and Managing Partner of Blue Tulip Ventures, investing in AI startups, and previously co-founded Affectiva, an MIT spinout that pioneered Emotion AI and was acquired by Smart Eye. She is also the author of Girl Decoded, which chronicles her journey as a woman in technology and her work humanizing AI. A passionate advocate for responsible and emotionally intelligent technology, el Kaliouby has been recognized by Forbes and Fortune among leading women in technology. She holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge.

Abderrahim Foukara

Dr. Abderrahim Foukara is a Distinguished Fellow at the National Council on U.S.-Arab Relations and former Washington, D.C. Bureau Chief for Al Jazeera, where he became a prominent voice on U.S. and Middle Eastern affairs. A veteran journalist, Foukara hosted Min Washington (From Washington), providing in-depth analysis of American politics and its impact on the Middle East and North Africa. He has appeared on CNN, CBS’s Face the Nation, and NPR, and was recognized by Time for his coverage of the Arab Spring. Originally from Morocco, Foukara previously worked with the BBC World Service and Public Radio International’s The World.

Nabeleh Ghareeb

Nabeleh Kakish Ghareeb is a business consultant and project manager who leads strategic initiatives for nonprofit organizations in Detroit. Her leadership experience includes serving as Chief Strategy and Administrative Officer at The Children’s Center of Wayne County and Associate Vice President of Business Operations at Wayne State University. In 2021, she was appointed to Michigan’s Commission on Middle Eastern American Affairs. Ghareeb is active with the Arab America Foundation, co-coordinating its Arab American Rising Leaders recognition program, and is a former two-term president of the Arab American Women’s Business Council. She holds degrees from Wayne State University and completed postgraduate studies at the University of Toledo.

Noura Ismail

Noura Ismail is an international development practitioner and researcher specializing in economic mobility for refugees. She is completing her PhD at the University of Oxford, researching how refugee labor mobility can expand opportunity and agency for displaced people. She is Co-Founder and Principal Researcher at Project Hilm and previously served as Chief Program Officer at Talent Beyond Boundaries, helping connect displaced talent with international employers across 14 countries. Earlier, she worked with Ashoka’s Social Finance team and served as a Kiva Fellow in Lebanon. Noura holds an MA from Columbia University and an MBA from Oxford and is an Arab America Foundation 40 Under 40 awardee.

Marwa Janini

Marwa is a Palestinian-American Muslim and the CEO of the Arab American Association of New York (AAANY). She holds a Master’s in Middle Eastern Studies from The CUNY Graduate Center, with published work on the Palestinian diaspora in Latin America. Under her leadership, AAANY has expanded programs, opened new locations, and strengthened partnerships to combat anti-Asian, anti-Arab, anti-Palestinian, and Islamophobic rhetoric and violence. Recognized as #12 on City & State’s inaugural MENA 50 list, Marwa is a proud New Yorker with roots in Beit Hanina, Palestine, and Managua, Nicaragua, and the devoted mother of three daughters: Amelie, Liyana, and Celine.

Mahmoud Khedr

Mahmoud Khedr is an Egyptian-American innovator, healer, and suicide-attempt survivor reimagining mental health through media, technology, and community. He co-founded FloraMind and Hidden Healers, through which he launched MTV’s Hidden Healers campaign, reaching over 10 million people, and co-created the $1M Hidden Healing Fund with Pinterest and Lululemon. Recognized on the Forbes 1000 list, he serves on the Board of Mental Health America and the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline Steering Committee. Mahmoud has worked at KPMG as an Innovation Manager and previously at Google, Meta, and the NYC Mayor’s Office of Innovation. He has spoken globally with governments, world leaders, and institutions, including the United Nations, Harvard, and Stanford.

Adel Korkor

Dr. Adel Korkor is a Syrian American physician, entrepreneur, philanthropist, investor, and community leader. A longtime nephrologist and healthcare executive, he is the founder of the Adel B. Korkor Foundation for Mental Health, which promotes awareness and works to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health. As an entrepreneur and investor, Dr. Korkor supports emerging startups and innovative ventures, helping promising ideas and entrepreneurs grow. He is also the former Chairman of the Board of the Arab America Foundation, where he helped advance its mission to promote Arab heritage, educate Americans about Arab identity, and connect and empower Arab Americans nationwide.

Omar Kurdi

Omar Kurdi is a nonprofit leader, writer, and community advocate dedicated to advancing Arab American identity and representation. He is the co-founder and former president of Arab Americans of Cleveland, which focuses on leadership development, civic engagement, and cultural programming. Omar also serves as CEO of Friends for Life Rehabilitation Services, transforming it into a regional leader in disability services. He has served on multiple boards, including the ADAMHS Board of Cuyahoga County, and was recognized as a “40 Under 40” leader by Crain’s Cleveland Business and the Arab America Foundation. A published poet, his works explore faith, immigration, and identity.

Micheline Maalouf

Micheline Maalouf is an Arab American licensed mental health counselor, educator, and advocate for accessible, culturally competent mental health care. Based in Orlando, Florida, she is the founder of Serein Counseling, where she specializes in anxiety, trauma, and multicultural issues. Maalouf is widely recognized for her engaging social media presence, where she uses platforms like Instagram and TikTok to destigmatize therapy and provide mental health education to a global audience. Featured in major media outlets, she is committed to breaking barriers around mental health in Arab and immigrant communities. Her work empowers individuals to heal, grow, and embrace emotional well-being.

Edward Mafoud

Edward Mafoud is President and co-owner of Damascus Bakeries, a third-generation family business rooted in Brooklyn since 1930. Founded by his maternal grandfather, Hassan Halaby, who brought traditional baking recipes from Damascus, Syria, the bakery became known for its authentic pita and lavash breads. Alongside his brother David, Edward helped transform the family bakery into a nationally recognized producer of artisan flatbreads, wraps, panini breads, and other innovative products distributed across the United States and internationally. Edward continues his family’s legacy by blending old-world baking traditions with innovation, quality, entrepreneurship, and a deep commitment to community and heritage.

Blanche Shaheen

Blanche Araj Shaheen is an Emmy Award-winning lifestyle correspondent for the NBC show California Live. She is also the cookbook author and host of the YouTube show “Feast in the Middle East,” where she shares the history, culture, and culinary expertise of Arab cuisine, particularly from Palestine, Lebanon, Jordan, and Syria. Her work has been featured on BBC International, NPR, Fox, Vogue Arabia, and even Virgin America Airlines, where her cooking show was featured on their airline’s in-flight entertainment. Her blog was voted the 6th most popular Middle Eastern food blog in the world.

Nada Shatila

Nada Shatila is CEO of Shatila Bakery, the Mediterranean bakery founded by her father, Riad Shatila, in 1979. Following his passing in 2013, Nada, her sisters, Tania and Batoul, and their mother, Zinat, continued his legacy as owners. Today, Shatila operates three Michigan bakeries, a manufacturing facility, and a worldwide shipping division. The company does business with Costco, American Airlines, Harry & David, Goldbelly, and international customers. Nada earned both a bachelor’s degree in International Studies and an MBA in Operations Management from the University of Michigan-Dearborn. In 2024, Shatila proudly received its prestigious Alumni Business of the Year Award.

Ryan Suto

Ryan Suto is Senior Manager of Government Affairs at FairVote, where he has worked since 2021. Previously, he served as Policy Counsel at the Arab American Institute and founded the National Arab American Bar Association. His work focuses on electoral system reform and voting rights. Ryan co-moderates the Process of Policy Lecture Series at Syracuse University’s Maxwell School and has received Penn State’s Philosophy Department Outstanding Alumni Award. He co-authored an amicus brief in Dept. of Commerce v. New York. Ryan holds a JD, MA in International Relations, MS in Public Relations, and bachelor’s degrees from Penn State.

Hala Taha

Hala Taha is a Palestinian American entrepreneur, podcast host, and business leader known for building influential platforms at the intersection of media, entrepreneurship, and personal branding. She is the founder and CEO of YAP Media, an award-winning social media and podcast marketing agency, and host of Young and Profiting (YAP), a leading business and entrepreneurship podcast. Taha began her career in radio and later worked in corporate marketing before launching YAP Media. Through her podcast, agency, and growing media network, she reaches a global audience, sharing insights from prominent entrepreneurs and business leaders while inspiring the next generation to build, lead, and succeed.

Shibley Telhami

Dr. Shibley Telhami is the Anwar Sadat Professor for Peace and Development, the Director of the University of Maryland’s Critical Issues Poll, and a Distinguished Scholar-Teacher. He is also a Nonresident Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution. Before coming to the University of Maryland, he taught at several universities, including the University of California at Berkeley, where he received his doctorate in political science. He has authored and edited numerous books, including one forthcoming book: Peace Derailed: Obama, Trump, Biden, and the Decline of Diplomacy on Israel/Palestine, 2011-2024 (co-authored). His most recent book is a co-edited with contributions volume, The One State Reality: What is Israel/Palestine? which was published in March 2023 with Cornell University Press. He has advised every U.S. administration from George H.W. Bush to Barack Obama. Telhami was selected by the Carnegie Corporation of New York along with the New York Times as one of the “Great Immigrants” for 2013 and the Washingtonian Magazine listed him as one of the “Most Influential People on Foreign Affairs” in both 2022 and 2023. He is also the recipient of many awards including the University of Maryland’s Distinguished Service Award and the University of Maryland’s Honors College Outstanding Faculty Award.

Zizi Zabaneh

Zizi Zabaneh, of Lebanese and Colombian descent, is an acclaimed Middle Eastern dance instructor celebrated for her passion and artistry. With years of experience teaching worldwide, she blends technical mastery with cultural storytelling and personal expression. She is the producer of the annual Caravan of Dancers festival in Orlando, Florida, which unites world-renowned artists to celebrate Middle Eastern dance through workshops and performances. A vibrant presence on TikTok and Instagram, she inspires a global community with tutorials, performances, and cultural insights. Dedicated to advancing both tradition and innovation, Zabaneh continues to shape the future of Middle Eastern dance worldwide.

James Zogby

Dr. James J. Zogby is a nationally recognized Arab American leader, author, pollster, and political commentator who has spent decades advancing Arab American civic engagement and understanding of the Arab world. He is founder and president of the Arab American Institute, a Washington, D.C.-based organization dedicated to empowering Arab Americans in public life. Zogby has advised U.S. policymakers and presidential campaigns and served in leadership roles within the Democratic National Committee. He is the author of Arab Voices and has written extensively on U.S.-Arab relations, public opinion, and identity. His pioneering advocacy has helped strengthen Arab American political participation and visibility nationwide.

Helen Zughaib

Helen Zughaib is a Lebanese-born Arab American artist whose vibrant work explores identity, displacement, migration, and our shared humanity. Born in Beirut, she lived throughout the Middle East and Europe before earning her BFA from Syracuse University and settling in Washington, D.C. Her work has been exhibited internationally and is held in prominent collections, including the White House, Library of Congress, World Bank, and Arab American National Museum. Zughaib has served as a U.S. Cultural Envoy and was selected for the Kennedy Center’s Social Practice Residency. Through bold color and storytelling, her art builds bridges between Arab and American cultures.

Mona Zughbi

Mona Zughbi is a two-time Emmy Award-winning news producer with extensive experience in shaping international and national news coverage. She began her career at NBC Network News, where she advanced from Assignment Editor to Senior International News Editor and Producer, playing a key role in delivering impactful global reporting. She later served seven years as Bureau Chief for RT News in New York City, overseeing comprehensive coverage across the Northeast region. Today, she works as a media consultant, advising media organizations, and is the Founder and Executive Producer of PetraStar Media, producing non-fiction television content for networks and streaming platforms.

Amal David

Dr. Amal Khalil David is the Director of Community Engagement at Arab America (www.arabamerica.com) and co-founder and board member of the Arab America Foundation, where she currently leads a grass-roots network of Arab heritage teams nationwide.  A Palestinian born in Nazareth, she earned her Ph.D. in Communication with an emphasis on multicultural education. She has over 35 years of experience in bilingual education as an administrator in Detroit Public Schools and as an adjunct professor at the college level. Additionally, she was a producer and a host of several radio programs in Detroit. In Washington DC, she created and developed the largest grass-roots Arab American women’s initiative in the U.S. Her participation as a community leader and advocate portrays a positive image of Arab American women.

Warren David

Warren David is the president of Arab America (www.arabamerica.com), a national media organization founded to promote an accurate image of the Arab American community and identity through several digital media platforms, which include an online website, Arab America E-News, and several social media platforms. He is a co-founder of the Arab America Foundation. This non-profit promotes the Arab heritage and empowers Arab Americans in the U.S. He is the former national president of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee in Washington, D.C., and was executive producer of the nationally acclaimed public television series “Arab American Stories.” A third-generation Arab American of Syrian and Lebanese heritage, he has invested his time and personal resources to document and tell the story of the Arab American experience.

Nibal Malshi

Nibal Malshi is an extraordinary Palestinian artist born in the vibrant city of Haifa. Since age five, Nibal has enchanted audiences worldwide, drawing inspiration from revered Arab artists and gracing prestigious stages across her homeland, Europe, and the USA, including the renowned Institute de Monte Arab in Paris. A proud Academy of Music and Dance graduate in Jerusalem, Nibal’s artistry knows no bounds. From captivating dance workshops in Ramallah to inspiring collaborations in Germany to numerous concert performances in the U.S., she spreads harmony and unity through her music. Join Nibal and her Arab music ensemble for an unforgettable performance that will resonate deeply with you.

Mona Miari

Mona Miari is an internationally acclaimed Palestinian singer-songwriter, musician, and artistic director based in New York City. Known for her powerful stage presence and commitment to Arabic music and Palestinian cultural expression, she has performed at Lincoln Center, BAM, Opera America, Roulette Intermedium, the Brooklyn Museum, and major festivals worldwide. She made history as the first Arab singer to headline Boston’s Hatch Memorial Shell. Miari serves as Artistic Director of the New York Arabic Choir and has collaborated with Roger Waters on “Comfortably Numb – Reimagined.” She is currently preparing her highly anticipated debut album, scheduled for release in 2026.

Karim Nagi

An Egyptian living in Chicago, Karim Nagi, has been a tireless contributor to Arab American life for 3 decades. He has recorded 18 albums, performed his Arabiqa cultural assembly in over 500 schools, produced dozens of Arab Dance Seminars, and published a book. He has lectured in several universities, including Yale and Stanford, and has a TEDx Talk, “The Tambourine, My Partner in Diplomacy & Disruption.” Nagi employs Arab percussion as instruments of advocacy, enticing countless Americans to support Arab culture. He is currently completing a new children’s book and accompanying music album, which are scheduled for release in early 2026.

Kareem Youssef

Kareem Youssef is a Lebanese American singer who was born in Lebanon and has lived in Brooklyn, New York since his family immigrated there in 1988. Growing up surrounded by Lebanese and Arab culture and listening to his father sing, he fell in love with music, especially that of Wadih el Safi, Mohammed Abdel Wahab, Fairouz, Umm Kulthuum and many others.
Kareem has been active in the church choir from a young age and leads as its director today. He joined the NYAO in 2011 as a member of the chorus, singing behind his father and the late Bassam Saba and is honored to be a part of continuing Bassam’s vision for the orchestra.

Firas Zreik

Firas Zreik is a Palestinian-born, New York–based artist, composer, lyricist, and educator who has revolutionized the role of the kanun on the global stage. Blending the Arab maqam tradition with contemporary styles, his music is both authentic and innovative, marked by nuanced microtonal expression. Since 2013, he has toured internationally and collaborated with renowned artists including Roger Waters, Simon Shaheen, Residente, and his mother, celebrated vocalist Amal Murkus. A Berklee College of Music graduate, Zreik has performed at Lincoln Center, Boston Symphony Hall, WOMEX, and the Carthage International Festival, while also mentoring emerging musicians worldwide.

Tarek Haddad

Tarek Haddad is a Jordanian-Canadian artist, singer, keyboardist, and oud player whose work blends authentic Arab musical traditions with a contemporary sound. He has performed at concerts, festivals, and on television and radio programs across the Arab world and North America. Haddad has released more than 30 songs, several earning millions of views, including “Akhadt Ithin Al-Madam,” “Al-Mansaf,” and “Al-Urdun Ilna.” He received an artistic honor in 2023 and has built a strong social media following. Known for his dynamic stage presence, Haddad delivers energetic performances combining vocals, instrumental music, and Arab musical traditions while connecting warmly with audiences worldwide.

Abe Diab

Abraham Diab, a proud Arab American musician from Detroit, Michigan, has been immersed in music since childhood, starting his journey at the age of seven. Introduced to the Arab organ at the age of 13 by his late father and teacher, Abdallah Abbas, Diab was inspired to pursue his musical dreams. Over the years, he has performed with local Arab ensembles at weddings, parties, and cultural gatherings, while also mastering the Arab accordion. A seasoned artist, he has been a percussionist for over 40 years and a keyboardist for more than 30 years. Diab brings his passion and heritage to this year’s CONNECT Empowerment Summit.
