The Power of Internships in Building Future Leaders

For many young professionals, internships are more than just for the resume. They are opportunities to explore career interests, develop skills, and connect classroom learning with real-world experience. For students interested in any major, internships can also provide a platform to amplify their interests while still building the foundation for future leadership as a young professional.
Since 2014, Arab America has hosted over 150 interns who gained experience in writing, research, marketing, and media while engaging with issues affecting Arab American communities in the U.S. and abroad. Through these responsibilities, interns also learn how to communicate effectively, manage competing priorities, and collaborate with professionals in their fields.
Turning Interests Into Professional Skills
One of the most valuable aspects of an internship is the opportunity to transform personal interests into practical skills. For Nadia, a current senior intern at Arab America, her experience helped provide her with an outlet to express and learn more about her interests in politics and Arab culture.
“… such a great opportunity, and I’m now I’m a senior intern, so I oversee more of the organizational aspects of the organization, like the summits, emails, things like that, and it’s taught me to be very organized and to be very timely with my work.”
Yet writing for a diverse audience requires more than familiarity with a subject; it demands the ability to communicate complex ideas to people with different levels of knowledge while engaging readers and making the information accessible. These skills are particularly important in journalism, public policy, and leaders of any field where effective communication shapes how audiences understand communities, cultures, and events.
Beyond writing, Nadia’s responsibilities have expanded as she has taken on a senior intern role where she helps oversee organizational tasks, including professional events such as Arab Americans’ upcoming summit coordination and digital communications. These responsibilities have strengthened not only her communication abilities but also her organizational skills, attention to deadlines, and ability to manage multiple projects, which translates to any job in any field.
Furthermore, her experience reflects a broader lesson about internships: how professional and personal growth often comes from being in an environment where you are not only challenged but trusted with new responsibilities.
Building Relationships and Opening Doors
Internships also provide an opportunity to build relationships with mentors, colleagues, and professionals who can help students navigate their career paths.
For Nadia, the experience at Arab America has extended beyond professional development. She describes the organization as a close-knit community:
“I think it’s just a really great family; for instance, I’ve grown really close with Warren and Amal, who are the owners and directors of Arab America, and they’ve just taught me so much. They’ve been so patient and great throughout my time here. And then also, the summits are a great opportunity for networking and meeting people who are in the field that you want to go into.”
These relationships can be especially meaningful for students who are still exploring their professional identities. Having mentors who encourage questions, provide guidance, and allow room for growth helps young professionals develop confidence in their path to becoming a professional.
Arab America’s events, including its annual CONNECT Empowerment Summit this November, also offer opportunities for interns to network with speakers and professionals working in fields they hope to pursue. These interactions introduce students to new career possibilities, unique perspectives, and help them form connections beyond their school circle.
Preparing the Next Generation of Leaders
Nevertheless, leadership is not developed overnight. It grows through experience, collaboration, accountability, mistakes, and the willingness to learn. Internships offer students the opportunity to practice these skills while also contributing to organizations whose work aligns with their current interests. Learning to write for a broad audience, coordinate projects within large groups, communicate professionally, and build relationships prepares students to take on greater responsibilities in their careers.
